What is teletherapy?
Teletherapy is live therapy through a video connection. You receive the same live, face-to-face interaction and treatment from your therapist as you would in person, it's just done through a phone or laptop.
How do I know if teletherapy is right for me/my child?
Teletherapy provides a flexible and accessible alternative to in-person mental health care and can be a good fit for many individuals. Teletherapy is often an ideal choice for families with busy schedules, as it eliminates the need for driving to/from a clinician's office. For many adolescents and young adults familiar with accessing a wide range of services on their phones or other devices and unfamiliar with talking in-person with an unknown adult, teletherapy may provide a more accessible and comfortable way to initiate mental health care. Research indicates that mental health outcomes for most common symptoms (including depression and anxiety) are as good via teletherapy as via traditional in-person therapy.
How soon can I schedule a call with a therapist?
We are typically able to schedule an initial, introductory consultation within a few days of hearing from you.
What should I expect from my consultation call and will I be charged for this?
A member of our clinical team will ask you questions about your needs and goals for therapy and answer any questions you may have about our team's experience, education and billing rates. Joon does not charge for this initial introductory conversation.
Why are Joon Care's treatment plans 16 weeks long?
Research shows that it takes between 12 and 20 weeks to see the effects of evidence-based care. That is, most clients show significant improvement in their depression and/or anxiety symptoms after 12 to 20 weeks of treatment. This is an important data point because therapy is a process and it takes time for that process to work. Setting our subscription to 16 weeks allows the therapy a solid and evidence-based amount of time to have the effects we want it to have in making you (or your teen) feel better and make the changes you want to make.
What does therapy cost?
Joon charges $150 for your initial 50-minute session. If the client is a minor, this call will include the client's parents/guardians as well. After this session, your Joon therapist will send you a customized treatment plan that will detail ongoing expenses. A typical 16 week plan that includes weekly live video-therapy sessions, access to the app-based skills, and a monthly parent check-in costs $500 per four week period. Of course, you will have the opportunity to extend your therapy and access to Joon's mental health skill-building tools as needed.
Will my insurance cover therapy?
Joon does not contract directly with insurance, but our therapists will happily provide you with an itemized statement for out of network reimbursement.
What do you mean by evidence-based assessment and treatment and what is a cognitive-behavioral approach?
"Evidence-based assessment and treatment" means we take what the science tells us about what causes mental health problems and what works to treat mental health problems, and then apply that scientific information to develop a treatment plan for each client. We use scientifically-validated measures and a clinical interview to collect information on your symptoms (assessment) and use strategies in therapy that have been shown to be effective in scientific studies (treatment).
Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been shown in numerous studies to be effective in reducing symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and other common mental health problems. This approach emphasizes that negative thinking patterns and maladaptive behaviors may cause and maintain mental health problems. Thus, CBT works to help people change those negative thinking patterns and replace unhelpful behaviors with more adaptive ones.
How should I evaluate whether a therapist is a good fit?
There are several components to evaluating whether a therapist is a good fit. First and foremost, the therapist should make you feel heard, validated, and supported. Second, you should feel that the therapist can work with you to build a relationship based on mutual respect and shared goals for your therapy. Third, you should feel confident that the therapist has the skills and training to work with you effectively.
What's the difference between a Licensed Psychologist, LMHC, LMHCA, etc.?
All of the therapists listed on our site are qualified to provide mental health care. The different abbreviations after provider’s names designate the training and licensure that each provider holds. The main differences between these licenses are related to the length and type of the training that the provider has.
What matters most is the provider’s fit with you!
Does it matter where I live?
Joon is currently available in California, Idaho, Oregon and Washington State. One of the benefits of teletherapy is that it doesn't matter where in the state you live. If you live outside of these states, please let us know where you'd like to see Joon next.
